Reflections on Dreams

I have heard it said that a dream ignored is like a letter unopened. If that is true, I have collected a room full (or two) of unopened letters during my lifetime.

Only in the past several years have I even begun to understand and appreciate how my dreams can provide me with profound insight into myself. And with greater self-knowledge comes increased personal power.

I have a special interest in symbols, and symbols are the language of dreams. There are many excellent books on dream symbols (see BOOKS in the right column of this page), but I have learned that ultimately you have to decide for yourself what a dream symbol means.

One of the most potent insights I have received regarding dreams is that the participants in my dreams are actually beings with whom I can dialogue and establish a relationship. By establishing a dialogue with these dream beings, I am able to more fully understand what their presence in my consciousness means and what they have to teach me.

When I was first introduced to this concept, it resonated immediately with me, though my rational mind was certainly resistant. If you are not completely freaked out by this idea and would like to explore it further, check out this tape set by Stephen Aizenstat in the Resources / Links below. In addition to this relatively radical approach to understanding your dreams, Aizenstat provides an excellent introduction to the more traditional methods of dream interpretation.

I am just a beginner in paying attention to the wisdom contained in my dreams, but I look forward to enriching my life and increasing my personal power by opening more and more of my “dream mail” from now on.
