Scientific research into the amazing human brain has simply exploded in the past several decades, and the pace is not letting up. Among the many significant discoveries during the past century is that we actually possess a triune brain, consisting of three seperate but integrated structures that have evolved over millions of years. Our primitive reptilian brain is overlaid by a more evolved mammalian brain, which is in turn overlaid by the complex and uniquely human neocortex. (NOTE: If you are interested in learning more about the human triune brain, see below.)
However, with all our recently acquired knowledge about the brain, how much do we know about our mind? Are the brain and the mind the same thing? Does the brain actually contain our thoughts, or only electrical impulses? Can a surgeon find and extract a thought when she opens up your brain?
Our thoughts exist in the realm of consciousness. The study of consciousness--the true source or location of mind activity--is certainly gaining steam. In fact, there are now academic programs on consciousness at several major universities in the United States (see below).
Ultimately, our personal power resides in the realm of consciousness, where our thoughts, our desires, our values, our dreams and our choices originate.
In this sequel to his popular book Cosmic Serpent, Narby discusses the presence and nature of intelligence in non-human beings, such as bees, amoeba, butterflies, ants and plants. He concludes with a succinct summary of recent findings on the structure and function of the human brain.
In this his first book anthropologist Jeremy Narby explores the amazing parallels between direct shamanic knowledge and recent scientific discoveriesregarding DNA and human origins.
A Secret History of Consciousness by former rock singer Gary Lachman provides an excellent overview of the study of consciousness.
